Congratulations to Metro Transit, whose new police facility in Minneapolis was recognized as a Finance and Commerce Top Project of 2019. Donlar Construction is honored to have served as general contractor on the construction project, working alongside Snow Kreilich Architects, Metro Transit, and a wide variety of subcontractors. The award was announced May 5th, after a panel of judges assessed the difficulty of the project, the design creativity, innovative construction techniques, contractor and management relations, and sustainability efforts.
The Metro Transit Police Facility project was an Addition and Remodel right in Minneapolis’ North Loop. The 30-month construction project included a four-level addition and a partial renovation of the existing facility, complete with evidence processing labs, vehicle bays, sally ports, administrative rooms, new elevators, and a simulation room.
The Project proved uniquely challenging due to restrictions caused by the site and its location. Solutions to these challenges include off-site staging, strict scheduling of site deliveries, contaminated soil removal, as well as clear and consistent communication.
The Metro Transit Facility has an array of features and design elements that make this building both unique and innovative. The building has a partial green roof, softening extreme temperatures and offering plant life in the heart of the city. The building is heated entirely by geothermal wells that run 500 feet under the property. This means that no gas is needed to heat the facility, and cooling requires much less electricity. The front entry is also reinforced with ballistic sheathing to offer a safe and secure environment to all who enter.
Thanks to collaborative efforts by all parties, this project turned out to be a great success. Donlar Construction is proud to have been a part of it and is extremely happy for Metro Transit, who are now inhabiting their award-winning new facility.
